Poem: Shine On, Star of Bethlehem

Shine On, Star of Bethlehem

Is that a star
that steady-moving light
or pseudo-star  projecting  stars
of stage and screen
to entertain and titillate
consumption-weary   minds?
Is that a star?

Is that an angel
that soft seductive  voice
promising  bliss -    sun and blue sky,
a top-range  car, fortune (it could be me!)
paradise -    and at such little cost?
Is that an angel?

The star shines clear
above a shelter on a city street
where lies a child caught in a web
of poverty,  helpless  and innocent
victim of powerful  people's  greed.
There shines the star.

The angel speaks
to workers  in the fields
(or in the kitchens  of the noisy inn)
bringing  news of peace on earth
with justice  and goodwill  to humankind.
There  speaks the angel.

God of the real,  the true,
speak through your living Word
and show us how
to see the artificial  for itself
and in today's  real world
to recognize  the angel and the star.
